Merkur is the German word for Mercury. A submission from Norway says the name comes from the Latin Mercurius, the Roman god of commerce and speed, but also the element Mercury (Quicksilver) as a heavy, silvery-white metal. Merkur is a white dun son of our homebred boy Malibu and we have high hopes for his future.
When we were looking for mares to cross with our homebred boy DD Malibu for the 2023 breeding season, Faksi was a mare we thought would compliment him well. Of course, our hope was to get a stunning filly out of this combination, but that is how breeding goes sometimes. Nonetheless, Merkur has impressed us so much, that we just can't part with him.
DD Malibu is sired by Prince Maximus Sur Mer, who we imported from Canada in cooperation with our friends at Dun In Farm in Michigan. He is sired by the Norwegian import Bakkens Marius and out of Bluebird Lane Oriole by Mogly. Maximus is an incredible mover with a short typy head and an incredible ability to round through the neck and poll. Malibu inherited this ability from his sire as well as the trainability coming down those lines. Malibu's dam is our stunning white dun mare Ironwood Helena, by OH Wynn. Helena has a lot of "sit" to her movement and drive off her hind end, so in many ways she and Maximus were different yet complementary in types of movement. Helena's head is very dishy, but a little longer and Malibu got in respect to his beautiful head and his movement the best from both parents.
Faksi is sired by Prydarson, who is still the highest evaluated stallion in North America and unfortunately passed in late 2019. He received a blue ribbon with 87 points and scored particularly well in breed type, overall and his trot with 9+points.
Her dam,Skjenna Gard Fiorgyn, is known for producing high quality dressage horses like Corgi Hill Felles (4th level), Corgi Hill Flinka and Corgi Hill Filsan, who was exported to New Zealand. Her pedigree goes back to very influential import stallions in breeding and performance with Felix and Flotren.
Faksi is a mare with excellent type, nice neck and impressive knee action in her movement. She is a very fast learner.
With every breeding we are hoping to get the best of both parents and with Merkur we surely did again, just in a different package. We love his pretty head, his ability to round through the neck and poll and use himself super well. We are hopeful that Faksi added a little more size to him as all of her Tsjalle foals were big and rather "moosy" and Malibu certainly put some refinement and elegance on Merkur.
Besides being a white dun, Merkur carries the grey gene recessively. Even though we will not have a ton of mares to cross with him in the future, we think his quality makes it still worth it over the quantity.
